Overview of Abia State School of Nursing Admission Process

Applications were invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the 3 year Basic Midwifery Programme in the following schools:

1. School of Midwifery, Umuahia
2. School of Midwifery, Amachara
3. School of Midwifery, ABSUTH, Aba

The college offers two programs:

1. Basic Nursing
2. Basic Midwifery Programme

Both of them span three years (six semesters). The introductory examination is held after the first six months of intensive training and only students who pass this internal screening are officially indexed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to continue their studies.

For practicing nurses and professionals, they also offer:

1. Post-Basic Nursing Programme
2. Post-Basic Midwifery Programme

These 18-month courses are for individuals who are already registered in one discipline such as Registered Midwives seeking a Nursing qualification or Registered Nurses who want to specialize in Midwifery.

Interested applicants are expected to do all on-site registrations at School of Nursing, Umuahia. But to be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Applicants must be at least 17 years old by the time of the academic session’s commencement.
2. You must have at least five (5) credits in WAEC, NECO, or GCE. The required subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These credits must be obtained in no more than two sittings. WAEC and NECO can be combined while NABTEB stands alone.
3. Although JAMB is not required for Basic Nursing or Midwifery programs, applicants may need to write a computer-based entrance exam and an oral interview.
4. Those applying for Post programs must have current practicing license and certificate of registration as a midwife.

The application fee is ₦10,000, and you are advised to use modern browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge to avoid technical glitches during payment or document upload. Below are the steps to apply:

1. Visit the official portal
2. Click “Start” to begin a fresh application.
3. If you have already begun and need to finish, click “Continue” to resume your progress.
4. On the registration page, you will be required to provide the following essential details:

• Full Name (as it appears on your O’Level results)
• Phone Number
• Program of Interest (Basic Nursing/ Midwifery)
• Valid Email Address (ensure you can log into this email)
• Date of Birth (DOB)

5. Once filled, click “Register Now”. A system-generated password will be sent to your email immediately. Check your Spam or Junk folder if you don’t see it in your inbox within a few minutes.
6. Return to the login page and use your email and the newly received password to gain access. You will be prompted to pay the application fee of ₦10,000. Pay the non-refundable application fee at UBA or Zenith Bank using the Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR).
7. After a successful payment, the full application form will be unlocked. Return to the portal and enter your RRR to access and complete the bio-data form.

• Enter your personal details.
• Input your O’Level results.

8. After filling the form, print your application slip and submit a photocopy to the Nursing Services Department at the Ministry of Health in Umuahia, along with your O’Level results, birth certificate, local government identification, and passport photograph.
